Join Rod Newman as he leads a class that will follow the daily readings in St. Luke’s Read through the Bible program. We will study the letters of Paul, the general letters, and the book of Revelation that compose the second half of the New Testament. The class will provide an interpretative framework for understanding these letters as well as taking a closer look at specific passages. • Parables of Christ

Why do we call them parables? To understand what Jesus was saying, we need insight to the culture which gave birth to his stories. During our study, we will discover the ancient customs which still exist to give a deeper understanding to Jesus' message. We also will discover how truly timeless these stories are, and how much they teach us today. And we will have fun in the process!

What we believe as Christians matters. In the first and second centuries many Christian believers were martyred for their beliefs. These Christians felt so strongly that their beliefs were important that they were willing to die for them! As the church, we have inherited this body of beliefs called ‘doctrines.’ This class will explore the origin and purpose of these doctrines by reading scripture and the writings of early church fathers. Questions will be explored such as : What does it mean to say, " Jesus is Lord? " What does it mean that we are saved?
• Movies and Faith

The deadCenter Film Festival recently celebrated its 10th Anniversary of bringing independent films from around the world to Oklahoma and providing a competitive platform for Oklahoma filmmakers to feature their work. This 10 week WNA series will feature some of the best, most thought provoking and inspirational films from the past 10 years of Oklahomas largest film festival. The primary focus will be on short films, 5-45 minutes long, that are not widely available at Blockbuster or other traditional outlets. But, we will also include a few key feature films. The series will kick off with an 8 minute documentary made by high school students in Colorado paired with an Oscar nominated 30 minute film made in Senegal, Africa in conjunction with UNICEF. The goal is to watch the films together as a group and then discuss both the message of the films and the medium itself as a means of communicating ideas.

The DNA of Relationships

God designed us to be in fulfilling relationships, at home, work and in friendships. This class uses spiritual principles to enable the participant to engage in relationships that are fulfilling and safe. In the class we will explore the causes of conflict in relationships and learn new ways to be in relationship with one another. We will learn how to create safety in our relationships and foster a 'win-win' environment.
“And Not One Bird Stopped Singing”: A Journey through Grief

Grief is a process, a journey, a series of steps and stages. It possible to feel as though you are the only one who has ever experienced what you are feeling. In many ways that is true, but in other ways, many of the emotions experienced on the journey of grief are held in common by others. The good news is that sharing with others and learning together, the journey can lead to healing.

Russian Language and Culture

Did you ever want to learn a new language but were reluctant because you thought it would be too hard or you were too old? St. Luke's has been working in Ulyanovsk, Russia since 1992 and we now sponsor 2 churches there. If you are interested in learning to speak Russian at the beginner’s level and in discussing Russian history, culture, societal changes and the role of the Methodist church in Russia, join Dr. Lauranne Harris for this 10 week class. This will be an interactive and fun class using computer, video and language practice.
Knitting and Needlepoint - Knit One, Give Two
Join experienced crafters to learn the art of knitting and needlepoint and to minister to one another, the church and community. You will learn to create prayer shawls, kneelers and communion cushions to beautify St. Luke's.
Body and Soul

Body and Soul is a fun workout for women of all athletic ability and fitness levels. We start with a devotional and then workout to inspiring Christian music. The workout is a combination of bands, weights and Pilates. Participants need to fill out a health questionnaire every year and will need a doctor’s permission if you exceed 12 points (typically if you are over 50 you need a doctor’s permission). Cost: $ 40.00 for 10 weeks
Beginner’s Guitar

Beginning Guitar is open to anyone interested in getting a foundation in guitar playing. We will focus on chord structures, strumming, and chord progressions. There will be an introduction to finger picking, reading music, and reading tablatures. Cost: $40 per person for 10 weeks
Intermediate Guitar

This course will focus on developing an understanding of elementary music theory as it relates to the guitar, with a discussion of the major scales, harmonizing the major scale to determine chord structure and a discussion on chord extensions and alterations and chord function. We will learn triad cord construction on 4 string sets. We will study moveable chords that can be used all over the neck with a focus on the CAGED System. We will also learn fingering patterns for the Major Scales and for the Major and Minor Pentatonic scales, (with blue notes), in 5 locations on the fret board that will allow full neck coverage. We will then discuss how the above skills can be used to play songs and improvise lead lines. We will use elementary Blues Progressions to develop both chord and improvising skills. This class is for experienced guitar players who have a basic knowledge of chord structure.

Adult confirmation class is a wonderful class for anyone who would like to more about the United Methodist Church, what it means to be a member of a church, the history of St. Luke’s and issues that help us as a denomination to Share God’s love and bring hope to the world. Rev. Linda Brinkworth will lead the class and cover how we understand the sacraments of baptism and communion, how United Methodist churches are connected to one another, the way we serve as a denomination in mission around the world and right here at home.

Bible study can begin anywhere a person is along their faith journey. Rev. Linda Brinkworth taught Introduction to Biblical Studies at Oklahoma City University for 8 years and will incorporate material from this course in a five week class this fall. Together the class will look at the very basic details of Bible study, including ways to select a Bible for yourself or someone else, how the Bible was created and the unique order of books within the Bible.
