Welcome to Samuel's Call!

What is Samuel’s Call?

In the fall of 2007, the Samuel’s Call ministry was born at St. Luke’s.  It began with a passion from parents and staff with the commitment to provide programs for children with special needs and their families.

The name for the ministry comes from 1 Samuel 3, where the boy Samuel hears the call of God while in the temple. Our ministry is based on the principle that all children, regardless of ability, are called by God to do God’s work in the world.

Membership at St. Luke’s is not required to participate in our programs, but all are welcome to join us for worship.

Our program is led by Kim Parris, Coordinator of Special Needs Ministries and Deborah Decker, President of the Autism Society of Central Oklahoma.  For questions about any of our programs, contact Kim Parris.

Samuel's Call Volunteer Opportunities

We are always looking for caring individuals to help with Parents Day Out held on the third Saturday of each month.  Every child is paired with their own volunteer so that they have the opportunity to receive special one-on-one attention.  We offer structured activities during the afternoon as well as plenty of unstructured play.

We try to pair each child with the same volunteer each month so that relationships can form and the children feel comfortable because they know their volunteer.  We know that this is not always possible because there are times when volunteers cannot attend, but we do try to stay as consistent as possible.

We also work very hard to match our volunteers with a child they will be comfortable with.  Some volunteers are more comfortable being matched with a sibling.  Sometimes, it might take a month or two before you find that you are matched with that special child that wins your heart.

No special training is required to be a Samuel's Call volunteer.  At drop-off time, the parents will spend time with you to give you any specific instructions that may be required.  Rovers are available to assist you at any time.  If your own children (late grade school through high school) want to come with you to help, it is encouraged, so you can serve others together.

Reminder e-mails are sent out two weeks prior to Parents Day Out to find out how many volunteers will be able to attend and you can RSVP by simply responding to the e-mail or by completing the online Volunteer RSVP Form to your right.   Please contact Kim Parris at 609-1010 or kparris@stlukesokc.org for for a volunteer application.
